Chilled Morning

A few deer, just relaxing in the backyard yesterday morning:

Deer!

Wish I was that relaxed on a Monday morning.

Don’t mind me…

I've been a little slow to post recently. The set-up for and now execution of the spring fundraiser takes up most of my time. We'll return to a regularly scheduled life by late Saturday. Thanks for listening.

You Will!

The future, as AT&T saw it in 1993:

I remember this ad campaign as was fascinated by it.  The thought of getting directions on a screen while driving, or paying a toll without having to stop and use cash, how is that possible? How could you possibly send a fax or conduct a meeting at a beach with a laptop and not have tons of cables? But here we are! Okay, so they missed the boat on a few things too. But, who knew that little thing called the cell phone would take off and you wouldn't need to go to a phone booth. So is the future of 1993?

Ironically, while we are in the future (?) or close to what this commercial imagined, which is about 20 years later (gasp!) AT&T no longer exists to be in this future time period. AT&T aka the American Telephone & Telegraph was bought up 5 years ago by what we know as at&t today. Weird huh? Wikipedia probably could do a better job explaining how that came to be.

A big game looms for Oswegonians

Division III sports don't always get a fair shake in so far as buzz. Maybe, that's what makes D-III games a little more special. These are games that fly under the mainstream college sports radar. It's not something  you will find on ESPN or Fox Sports. Further to the point, hockey isn't always the banner sport for sports coverage, even in snowy and cold Central New York.

Then again, there is this weekend. Oswego plays host to the Plattsburgh Cardinals.  This contest brings together two teams in the top 10 in D-III hockey nationwide, and the top two teams in SUNYAC play. There is also the history. Forget about most of the history where Plattsburgh leads the overall record between the two teams. Lets focus on the record at Oswego's newer arena, the Campus Center. Simply put, Plattsburgh OWNS Oswego. 4 years ago, Oswego moved into the state of the art facility, and there is only one opponent who continuously eludes them in the win column.  In the first year Oswego played at the Campus Center, they won the NCAA D-III championship. They won the trophy  despite loosing to Plattsburgh in conference play. Oswego proved they could win it all, but still couldn't defeat Plattsburgh.

Will this year be any different? It's anyone's guess. Earlier in the season, Oswego defeated Plattsburgh on their own turf. Meanwhile, Oswego has been tops on the national rankings for weeks. This Saturday, while most of the sports world will be engulfed in day 6 of pre Super Bowl coverage,  myself and close to 2,000 other fans will enjoy an exciting college hockey match up.

Update: Games will be available online with streaming audio and streaming video from the campus media stations. Also, the traditional methods of 88.9FM or Cable 96 if you're in the greater Oswego area. I believe the game is sold out.

Swamped

Where have I been? Okay, maybe you haven't given it a second thought.  Personally and professional, I have had a busy few months. I thought I was busy before, but the past few months are a new high (or low depending on how you look at it I suppose.)

Who knew Public Radio could be so complex? I knew this fall was going to be a marthon of projects but some things came together to create the perfect storm for a fall that has been a bit overwhelming.

Luckily, work doesn't do much special during the Thanksgiving to New Years holiday corridor so it should be a calmer next month and a half. Here's hoping!

Mac Addict!

From the files of...why on earth am I still holding on to this...

macaddicts

Several years worth of MacAddict magazines are heading off to the big recycling bin....finally.  MacAddict was a magazine with a snarky attitude dedicated solely to the Macintosh. It hasn't been published since January 2007 (it continues on today as MacLife but it's not the same.) Yet, for some reason I have held on to these. I have a collection that began when my interest of Macintosh computers started, sometime around the beginning of 1998 (and a subscription was a Christmas present from my sister Margot.)

I seem to recall canceling my subscription around 2001 or 2002, around the time where their coverage went exclusively to Mac OS X. At the time, I was an old fart sticking with the legacy operating system, OS9, for many more years then was socially acceptable in most communities.  Thus, the magazine wasn't as relevant to me.

Of course, now the opposite has happened. I eventually caught up with the times, and now...who are these relevant to? I have no idea why I held on to these. I was cleaning my office area in the apartment and noticed the whole stack in a milk crate. They have collected dust, there is no information worth referencing, and unlike baseball cards...these will not increase in value as they get older. So, goodbye MacAddict...now what do I do with this empty milk crate?

Early Bird

Busy weekends and now busy weekdays...

This past week has been very involved. Our campus had the chancellor of the entire SUNY system stop by which included several events, we're in the middle of performance reviews, a revision of a few behind the scene projects, and then there's live coverage for Sotomayor. All of these have involved some very tricky logistics. I'm thankful I survived, and it's over. I'm on the early shift tomorrow which means my weekend starts at 1pm. Yay for me!
