End of the season for another year
Winter drew to a close this past weekend, as well as the D-III hockey season. It was an exciting year for the Oswego Lakers. Unfortunately, it didn't end with a win in the championship game for Oswego. They came up one goal short in the semi-final game on Friday. St. Norbert scored on Oswego with less than a minute to go in the game, which was tied before the goal.
The semi and final game were both played in Lake Placid. This provided Michele and I an opportunity to take a long weekend up to the Adirondacks to watch some college hockey and enjoy peace and quiet provided in the mountains. We went to the final game, despite Oswego's absence from the marquee. The St. Norbert Knights fell to the Norwich Cadets with 30 seconds to go in the second overtime. Yes, the second OT! Over 90 minutes of hockey in one game! The game began at 5pm, and ended some time after 8! It was a lot of hockey. Needless to say, Michele and I and various friends were tired and hungry after the competition (and all we had to do is watch!)
All in all, a great weekend. Oswego is only loosing 4 seniors this year. There is plenty of hope for successful seasons in the future for the young and talented Lakers.
Goodbye college hockey for another year, and goodbye winter we'll see you again some time soon.

I start with photos of the line to get in. This is to illustrate the intense interest in the game. The game was sold out last Monday, but it was important for standing room only, and student ticket holders to get there early to get a good spot. It's not like this for most games. There was 3,000 people in attendance. Games normally average between 1,800, and 2,200.
It was a good contest between the two arch-rivals. Oswego came out and got their first point 40 seconds into the game! Despite the initial adrenaline rush, it was a close game throughout, and a great time. Plattsburgh had a difficult time trying to tie the game in the moments of the game because they were assessed a "Too Many Men on the Ice" penalty. Ouch! Here's the last few moments of the game:
With that, there are only a handful of games left in the regular season. Plattsburgh is likely a team Oswego will see again in the post season.

A big game looms for Oswegonians
Division III sports don't always get a fair shake in so far as buzz. Maybe, that's what makes D-III games a little more special. These are games that fly under the mainstream college sports radar. It's not something you will find on ESPN or Fox Sports. Further to the point, hockey isn't always the banner sport for sports coverage, even in snowy and cold Central New York.
Then again, there is this weekend. Oswego plays host to the Plattsburgh Cardinals. This contest brings together two teams in the top 10 in D-III hockey nationwide, and the top two teams in SUNYAC play. There is also the history. Forget about most of the history where Plattsburgh leads the overall record between the two teams. Lets focus on the record at Oswego's newer arena, the Campus Center. Simply put, Plattsburgh OWNS Oswego. 4 years ago, Oswego moved into the state of the art facility, and there is only one opponent who continuously eludes them in the win column. In the first year Oswego played at the Campus Center, they won the NCAA D-III championship. They won the trophy despite loosing to Plattsburgh in conference play. Oswego proved they could win it all, but still couldn't defeat Plattsburgh.
Will this year be any different? It's anyone's guess. Earlier in the season, Oswego defeated Plattsburgh on their own turf. Meanwhile, Oswego has been tops on the national rankings for weeks. This Saturday, while most of the sports world will be engulfed in day 6 of pre Super Bowl coverage, myself and close to 2,000 other fans will enjoy an exciting college hockey match up.
Update: Games will be available online with streaming audio and streaming video from the campus media stations. Also, the traditional methods of 88.9FM or Cable 96 if you're in the greater Oswego area. I believe the game is sold out.

Half way through the hockey season
Wow! What an intense season so far. The Oswego Lakers find themselves 13-1 at the end of the first half of the season and atop the USCHO.com national rankings as of 12/07/09. It has been a surprise. I knew they would be good, but not outstanding. I hope they can keep this up. We have seen some exciting stuff including short handed goals contributing to a natural hat trick. How is this possible?

The Lakers are off to a good start this season. They are in first place of their division and close to the top of the national D-III coaches poll. Good stuff! Now if they can find themselves defeating Plattsburgh at home.

Hockey in Oswego
Number 1 in the country, number 1 in the conference, and chief rival Plattsburgh was in town to play a game against Oswego. Luckily, for both teams this game had absolutely nothing to do with standings both teams were firmly in place as number 1 and number 2 respectively.
