Busy as a bee

In a perfect world, I would make a post of some substance every day.  I have maintained a blog for about 6 or 7 years (only 3 in this current form via WordPress) and have yet to meet that goal. This is mostly because I don't know that I  really have anything particularly interesting for anyone in the ether. In this age of the internet anyone can have a space and spew their nonsense and well...I guess I'm of them.  Anyway, aside from content, my other major obstacle has been time.  June has been a busier month at my place of employment compared to other months. Most recently I have been busy with...

Carl Kassel with Me!

...if public radio talent were rock stars, this guy would probably be one of the lead artists in the band.  Carl Kasell has been with NPR since the early days of the public radio system. He was part of the most listened to public radio programs, Morning Edition. So, if you have listened to public radio at some point in the past 30 years, you probably heard Carl once, twice, or too many times to count.  It was amazing to meet Carl. It wasn't his first visit to the area, actually his third as a guest of WRVO.  Many listeners were so excited to meet and see him. We had several events surrounding his visit to the area. It's amazing to see how people react to a voice they've heard forever on radio.  He's a rock star!

Furlough Plan for State Workforce

Hey, this may apply me...

...how inconvenient this could be.

One of *those* days…

This article from ZDnet:

Defective McAfee update causes worldwide meltdown of XP PCs

...sums up my day. A program designed to defend computers for virus and worms caused the issue and rendered my computer at work useless. We shut down every computer in station until we knew what the issue was and slowly brought back up computers which managed not be affected.  It's amazing how much the station relies on computers.  I had 14 things on my to-do list today, and one of them got done.

Hard to believe

Today I was working on an on-air send off to a colleague at WRVO who has been at the station for 41 years. We rarely do on-air behind the scenes segments, but this will be a special situation for a guy whose been with WRVO 41 years! Does that happen frequently? I hope to have the ability to keep a job in the same career for 41 years, let along at the same place. Unfortunately (and fortunately as the case may be) media is changing so rapidly I doubt I  will be able to have a similar amount of longevity, but who knows. Wow...41 years.  Sheesh!

Shelbyville Lemons

You've seen the ads, you've heard the buzz, and you find it all very silly. Yes, it's fantasy baseball. I'm giving it a try this season. A colleague of mine has created a league via ESPN for WRVO staff. I created my team tonight, The Shelbyville Lemons. The name comes from the arch rival city to Springfield (where the Simpsons live). Shelbville stole Springfield's lemon tree in season 6.  Yes, that's right, I am a nerd too!

Another semester over…

Another semester at SUNY Oswego draws to a close this week. It means two things to me, well maybe three. 1) Student staff at WRVO will be disappearing this week 2) I'm done teaching 3) There are a lot more parking spots to choose from.

This will complete my third semester teaching as an adjunct professor for Media Copywriting.  I was informed earlier this semester that I will not be continuing to teach it into the spring. That is okay, I knew I was only supposed to do this for a limited time anyway.  I was only supposed to teach one semester, then it quickly became 3!

Teaching copywriting was a wonderful experience. Not too long ago (okay, maybe 8 years now),  I was taking the course and it was one of my favorites, which made teaching it even more enjoyable.  Teaching was the profession I originally set out to do when heading off to college. However, I got diverted into something I loved much earlier in life, radio.  I made the decision to change from studying to teach in my third year at college (yeah, kind of late.)

After working at a radio station for many years, it was a thrill to be asked to teach. Even though there were some stressful days, it was a nice balance to have a full-time job at a public radio station and also teach one course.

One reason why teaching the course was short lived was because I do not have a masters degree. It is one of the minimum requirements to teach the course. It is a reasonable request. I hope to achieve a masters degree. I frequently beat myself up over the fact that I have been on this campus for a number of years as a full time employee with discounted opportunities to take courses, yet I have not gathered the time to initiate and follow through with that course of action.

Oh yeah, Cleveland…

I was going through recent photos and realized I never posted a few pictures of my trip last month to Cleveland:

In case you were wondering why I was in Cleveland, I was at a public radio conference. Yes, even public radio has trade shows.  Every year it's in a different place like most conferences tend to be.

I have been attending these programs for the past couple years. Usually I take a day or two extra to do a little exploring because these conferences are in places I have never been before. Cleveland was a city I had yet to visit prior to this conference, but I was unable to stay a few extra days. All these photos are mostly on my last day after the last session and only a few hours prior to the plane. Due to budget constraints I wasn't able to spend extra time.

However, I discovered...Cleveland isn't that far away.  It's just about the same amount of time as it is to Connecticut.  Up until this summer, Buffalo was as far west as I have been in terms of driving. Then, in August Michele and I took a drive to Chicago to visit my brother Ben and passed Cleveland along the way. It's just one of those things...now it all seems a bit closer. I hope to visit Cleveland (and Chicago for that matter) again some time soon (and have more photos to share!)
